Is cultivating brand affection akin to celebrating Valentine’s Day in elementary school? Hear me out. On Valentine’s Day, my classmates and I would create various pink and red heart-shaped cards for each other. One by one, we’d deposit our Valentines into shoe boxes adorned with glitter, stickers, and feathers. At the day’s end, it was exhilarating to take count. What sweet nothings did your best friend craft? What did your crush pen? How many did you collect? Did you score any candy?
For marketers, brand affection sparks similar joyous sentiments, but even more profoundly. It signifies the level of emotional bond they’ve formed with their audience. It’s the validation they require that their approach has genuinely succeeded in cultivating loyalty and promoting their mission.
Nicholas Charlier, Head of Global Community and Education at Vivobarefoot, clarifies: “We’re a shoe company, but our real goal is to enhance awareness, interaction, and connection with natural health. Our desire for people to cherish our brand stems from wanting them to value themselves, their health, and the surrounding environment.”
If you’re pondering, “What does brand affection (on social) have to do with it?”, the answer is absolutely everything. Brands that can establish enduring, significant relationships with their audiences are the ones poise for success in this evolving business landscape.
What is brand affection?
Brand affection embodies the positive feelings consumers harbor toward your brand that motivate them to interact with your content, purchase your products or services, choose you over competitors, and advocate for your company. It spans various channels and touchpoints—which indicates every phase of the customer journey should be viewed as a chance to nurture brand affection.
Brand affection is increasingly vital given the heightened competition across sectors and platform saturation. Charlier elaborated, “There’s an overwhelming amount of information available online. Numerous brands vie for notice. Consumers want assurance that brands and products fulfill their promises and if they can trust the people behind the products and marketing. It’s not about fleeting victories like viral campaigns; it’s about earning and sustaining brand trust, transparency, and goodwill for the long haul.”
The components that enhance brand affection
Findings from The 2025 Sprout Social Index™ support his insights. The report revealed that consumers are most inclined to favor brands on social media with a high-quality product or service. This serves as a powerful reminder for brands that social cannot make up for broader business challenges—and delivering a superior customer experience should be a paramount objective.

The report further details the essential traits consumers attribute to brand content: authenticity and relatability. People aren’t overly concerned with the production quality, whether low or high, or if product promotion dominates the conversation. They value brands that show up for them instead of merely speaking at them.

In fact, as per a Q4 2024 Sprout Pulse Survey, consumers believe that brands should prioritize personalized customer service on social media in 2025. Charlier reiterates how attentive community feedback contributes to a successful brand. “We’re fortunate that our customers inform us when we go off course. This allows us to take responsibility and rectify matters. Listening to your community inspires brand affection. Transparency in all your actions fosters connection.”
Ways to assess brand affection on social media and beyond
Evaluating brand affection isn’t as elusive as it might seem. In some instances, it involves reusing existing metrics, while in others, it’s about establishing new measurement parameters that benefit marketing, sales, and customer service teams.
Charlier shared how Vivobarefoot gauges brand affection and provided insights into the significance of each metric, which may inspire your strategy.
Awareness
Whether awareness is viewed as a superficial metric is contested in the social media realm. It doesn’t reflect intent or directly correlate to revenue. Yet, it remains relevant, especially when you need to measure general awareness relative to competitors. Moreover, in Vivobarefoot’s case, it’s essential to enlighten consumers who may not be aware of any foot issues.
“Before discovering Vivobarefoot, many people hold the belief that overly cushioned shoes are necessary, which limits movement and weakens foot strength and mobility. This adversely affects posture, pain, and performance, as well as our interaction with the ground,” remarks Charlier.
Vivobarefoot educates its community through social media content, health professionals-turned-creators, events, and more, showcasing the scientific rationale behind the minimalist footwear trend. This awareness can transform into advocacy when individuals try the products themselves (more on this below).
Charlier encapsulates it: “We have an incredible community passionately supportive of our mission. That brand affection has propelled our business growth through awareness initiatives.”
Engagement
The Index indicates that overall engagement is the primary metric through which marketing leaders will evaluate social success in 2025. Engagement metrics like comments, shares, and reactions narrate a compelling story about the resonance of your content and can enhance understanding of how your audience interacts with your products offline.
Charlier emphasized the necessity for Vivobarefoot to comprehend the impact of their footwear on their customers’ daily experiences. “We aim to quantify how individuals engage with our product and their general satisfaction with it. Are they aligned with our mission? Are they adopting that healthy mission themselves? We can answer those questions through regular interactions with online content—whether social media or our online courses.”
Sentiment
However, engagement alone doesn’t encompass the entire scope of community support for your narrative. That’s where sentiment becomes relevant—the tone individuals use when discussing your product. Data from Sprout Listening from December 28, 2024, to January 27, 2025, reveals that Vivobarefoot enjoys an impressive 91% positive sentiment score on X. This largely relates to how effectively their brand storytelling resonates with consumers and how customers feel when they try on their shoes.
“We aspire to motivate people and empower them to attain their best health—encouraging them to connect with our message and adopt it as their own. Our brand sentiment reflects how individuals perceive their own health journeys and the role Vivobarefoot plays in them.”
Advocacy and customer loyalty
The classic marketing sayings, “The best advertising is word-of-mouth” and “It’s simpler to retain a customer than to attract a new one,” hold true when evaluating brand affection. It’s straightforward (and somewhat conventional) but every brand’s aim is to secure lifelong customers while motivating satisfied customers to share their experiences.
For Vivobarefoot, this journey begins when customers wear their shoes. “Once individuals start wearing our products, they instantly connect with the ground. It might be their first experience like this in years. Unless we’re on the beach, most adults rarely go barefoot. It’s a transformative experience. The products fulfill their promises and deliver a remarkable experience that leaves an indelible impression. This moment (and all subsequent experiences) nurtures an emotional bond with our products, leading to brand advocacy,” explains Charlier.
When you’re able to convert an emotional bond into brand advocacy, it’s a clear indication that your brand affection strategy is effective. “Are customers going above and beyond simply purchasing your products? Are they sharing your content? Are they joining events? Are they buying additional products? Are they leaving reviews?” inquires Charlier.
User-created content
While audience engagement is welcomed and valued, user-generated content (UGC) elevates brand affection to the next level. When fans produce their own content regarding your brand, it not only extends your exposure to new audiences but also builds trust. Tracking the influx of UGC, along with how frequently that content is engaged with, serves as a useful measure of brand loyalty.
“As a footwear brand, we design products for various occasions—whether it’s training at the gym, hiking mountains, walking the dog, or exploring the city. We even offer kids’ shoes. UGC effectively demonstrates how our designs cater to every occasion in an authentic manner that reflects each user’s unique lifestyle. Subsequently, we analyze how many individuals are creating content on our behalf, their engagement rates, and how conversations regarding our brand are evolving,” shares Charlier.
(Brand) affection is all around
Much like the delight of sharing Valentines, cultivating brand affection focuses on creating moments that help your audience feel acknowledged, appreciated, and connected. Whether it involves genuine content, meaningful engagement, or products that meet their promises, these acts of dedication and consistency ignite enduring bonds.
When your audience begins to express their appreciation for your brand—through likes, comments, reviews, or UGC—it resembles opening a box brimming with glitter-covered affirmations. The more affection you extend toward your audience, the more your brand’s relationships (and business) will thrive in return.
Charlier summarizes it well: “There are two dimensions to building brand affection. There’s the logical aspect focused on quality and pricing. Then there’s the emotional aspect. The part of the experience influenced by the feelings people associate with your brand and mission. That is the sweet spot.”
