Improving Data Compression Effectiveness with Brotli Algorithm

Pssst… have you observed your site loading a tad quicker than usual?

It’s not just in your head!

We’re pleased to inform you that we’ve implemented Brotli across all of your WPMU DEV hosted sites, providing an average of 11.62% enhanced compression compared to before (and swifter sites as a result!)

This adjustment will greatly benefit you, especially if your website features a lot of data like images, videos, and other media.

Continue reading to discover more about Brotli and how it can enhance your site.

What is Brotli?

Brotli, a compression algorithm created by Google, delivers significantly superior compression rates compared to the conventional GZIP method we were utilizing.

It compresses files with greater efficiency, resulting in smaller file sizes that reduce bandwidth consumption. This means your site will load quicker and provide a more seamless experience for your visitors, particularly those using mobile devices or slow internet connections.

Brotli is compatible with all modern browsers, enhancing the experience for nearly all your users. If you’re unsure whether your browser supports it, you can check this link to verify!

And don’t be concerned about users on outdated browsers or those that don’t yet support Brotli. For them, your site will revert to GZIP and it will continue to function normally.

What Do I Need to Do?

Great news – there’s nothing you need to do.

Brotli has been activated on your site by default, so you’re already benefiting from that speed increase. Maybe you’ve noticed things loading a bit faster? Now you know why!

This *also* indicates that if you’ve been utilizing a CDN provider (like, ahem, Cloudflare) to utilize Brotli, it’s no longer necessary. 🙂

Cost savings!

How Much Faster is Brotli?

We thoroughly evaluated Brotli to confirm it truly delivers on its claims.

We contrasted GZIP and Brotli compression across various WordPress files, including the default “Hello World” post and home pages from WPMU DEV templates like Landscaping, Modern Business, Persona, and Simple Business.

As shown in the results, Brotli consistently outperformed GZIP concerning bytes saved, making each file more effectively compressed.

The lower the numbers regarding data size in bytes, the better! As displayed in the table below, Brotli saved bytes across all categories, achieving up to 17.02% savings for the modern business site.
