Some ChatGPT users can now search the web with ChatGPT search, OpenAI announced today.
ChatGPT has been able to search the web for several months, but today’s update is part of OpenAI’s larger push into AI search.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT search has an opportunity to challenge Google’s search monopoly with a much different user experience (e.g., less clutter, less search features, no ads).
Why we care. We’ve long waited to see what OpenAI’s search product. Now it’s here. While it’s too early to tell what impact ChatGPT search will have on Google, we know that SearchGPT (despite having a small user base) was already sending more referral traffic to brands than other AI engines like Perplexity and Claude.
How to search. Go to ChatGPT, click on the web search icon, and enter your query. Here’s what ChatGPT’s search icon looks like:

Categories. ChatGPT search includes up-to-date information and unique visual designs in these specific categories:
- Weather.
- Stocks.
- Sports.
- News.
- Maps.
Sources. ChatGPT search will cite its sources via inline citations and a Sources button underneath its responses (answers) to queries. Clicking the button opens a sidebar of links, called Citations.

Availability. To use ChatGPT Search, you’ll need to be a ChatGPT Plus or Team user – or be on the waitlist for SearchGPT.
- Search will become available for free ChatGPT users “over the coming months.”
- You can access search at chatgpt.com and on the desktop and mobile apps.
How it works. According to OpenAI:
- “The search model is a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o, post-trained using novel synthetic data generation techniques, including distilling outputs from OpenAI o1-preview. ChatGPT search leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners, to provide the information users are looking for.”
One of those third-party search providers is Microsoft Bing. Based on its ChatGPT search help document, OpenAI is sharing search query and location data with Microsoft.
Chrome Extension. You can make ChatGPT your default search engine on Chrome by downloading this Chrome Extension.
More to come. OpenAI said it plans to improve the search experience for shopping and travel queries.
What they’re saying. Varun Shetty, OpenAI’s head of media partnerships, told the Washington Post (subscription required):
- “We think it improves relevancy and decreases hallucinations, because of the ability to go out to the web.”
SearchGPT. We were expecting OpenAI to integrate SearchGPT into ChatGPT search at some point this year. For now, at least, it seems SearchGPT, announced in July, will live on as an experimental search prototype – perhaps where new ChatGPT search features are tested.

**OpenAI Introduces Official Launch of ChatGPT Search Feature**
In a significant advancement for artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing, OpenAI has officially launched a new search feature within its popular ChatGPT platform. This feature, which has been highly anticipated by users, is designed to enhance the capabilities of ChatGPT by allowing it to access and retrieve up-to-date information from the web in real time. The introduction of this search functionality marks a major step forward in making AI-powered conversational agents more dynamic, accurate, and useful for a wide range of applications.
### What is the ChatGPT Search Feature?
The ChatGPT search feature enables the AI to go beyond its pre-existing knowledge base, which is limited to the data it was trained on (with a knowledge cutoff in September 2021). With the search feature, ChatGPT can now access and retrieve information from the web, allowing it to provide real-time answers to user queries, including the latest news, developments, and other time-sensitive information.
This feature is particularly useful for users who need up-to-date information on topics such as current events, scientific advancements, or emerging trends in technology, business, and other fields. Previously, ChatGPT was limited to providing responses based on its training data, which could lead to outdated or incomplete answers for certain queries. The search feature addresses this limitation by enabling the AI to pull in the latest information from reliable sources on the internet.
### How Does the Search Feature Work?
The search feature is integrated directly into the ChatGPT interface. When a user asks a question that requires up-to-date information, the AI can automatically initiate a web search to find relevant content. The search results are then processed and summarized by the AI to provide a coherent and concise response to the user.
For example, if a user asks, “What are the latest developments in artificial intelligence?” ChatGPT can now perform a web search to gather recent articles, blog posts, or research papers on the topic. The AI will then synthesize the information and present it in a user-friendly format. This process happens seamlessly, with the user receiving an answer that reflects the most current knowledge available.
### Benefits of the Search Feature
1. **Access to Real-Time Information**: One of the most significant benefits of the search feature is the ability to provide real-time information. This is particularly valuable for topics that are constantly evolving, such as news, politics, and technology. Users no longer need to worry about the AI’s knowledge cutoff, as the search feature ensures that the latest information is always available.
2. **Improved Accuracy**: By accessing the web, ChatGPT can cross-reference multiple sources of information, leading to more accurate and reliable responses. This is especially important for complex or nuanced topics where a single source may not provide a complete picture.
3. **Broader Range of Applications**: With the ability to search the web, ChatGPT becomes a more versatile tool for a wider range of use cases. Whether users are conducting research, staying informed on current events, or seeking advice on specific topics, the search feature enhances the AI’s ability to assist in these tasks.
4. **Enhanced User Experience**: The search feature improves the overall user experience by reducing the likelihood of receiving outdated or incomplete answers. Users can now rely on ChatGPT to provide more relevant and timely information, making interactions with the AI more satisfying and productive.
### Potential Use Cases
The introduction of the search feature opens up a wide array of potential use cases for ChatGPT, including:
– **Research Assistance**: Students, professionals, and researchers can use ChatGPT to quickly gather information on a particular topic, including the latest studies, reports, and articles.
– **News and Current Events**: Users can stay informed on breaking news and developments in real time, whether it’s related to politics, business, sports, or entertainment.
– **Product Recommendations**: Consumers can ask ChatGPT for recommendations on products, services, or trends, with the AI pulling in the latest reviews and comparisons from the web.
– **Technical Support**: Developers and IT professionals can use ChatGPT to troubleshoot issues or find solutions to technical problems by accessing the most recent documentation and forums.
– **Health and Wellness**: Individuals seeking advice on health-related topics can benefit from the AI’s ability to retrieve the latest medical research, wellness tips, and expert opinions.
### Privacy and Ethical Considerations
As with any AI-powered tool that accesses the web, privacy and ethical considerations are paramount. OpenAI has implemented safeguards to ensure that the search feature adheres to strict privacy standards. The AI does not store or retain personal data from users, and it only retrieves publicly available information from the web.
Additionally, OpenAI is committed to ensuring that the search feature provides accurate and unbiased information. The AI is designed to prioritize reputable sources and avoid spreading misinformation or harmful content. However, as with any web-based search tool, users are encouraged to critically evaluate the information provided and
