Education, technology and software development websites are seeing a referral traffic boost from ChatGPT search — and ChatGPT sent more traffic to more than 30,000 unique domains by November.
That’s according to new Semrush (disclosure: MarTech is owned by Semrush) analysis of 80 million lines of global clickstream data from the second half of 2024.
Search behavior changes. ChatGPT answered about 54% of queries with search turned off, with the remaining 46% of queries using search.
- The average ChatGPT prompt length was 23 words, with a high of 2,712 words.
- The average ChatGPT search length was much lower — just 4.2 words, with a high of 301 words.
Search intent shift. In search, keywords have an intent – navigational, informational, commercial and transactional (though there are additional types of search intent). However, only 30% of ChatGPT prompts fell into any of these categories, the analysis found. That means 70% of the prompts are unique and rarely or never seen in classic search engines (e.g., Google, Microsoft Bing).

# **Report: ChatGPT’s Growing Role as a Traffic Referrer is Reshaping Search Behavior**
## **Introduction**
The rise of AI-driven chatbots, particularly OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is transforming how users access and consume information online. Traditionally, search engines like Google have dominated web traffic referrals, directing users to websites based on keyword queries. However, recent reports indicate that ChatGPT is emerging as a significant traffic referrer, reshaping search behavior and challenging the traditional search engine model.
## **ChatGPT’s Role in Web Traffic Referral**
ChatGPT, with its ability to provide direct, conversational responses to user queries, is increasingly being used as a primary source of information. Unlike search engines that present a list of links for users to explore, ChatGPT delivers summarized answers, often referencing specific sources. This shift in behavior is leading to a new dynamic in how users interact with online content.
### **Key Factors Driving ChatGPT’s Influence**
1. **Conversational Search Experience**
– Users prefer ChatGPT’s interactive and personalized responses over traditional search engine results.
– The AI’s ability to understand context and refine answers based on follow-up questions enhances user engagement.
2. **Direct Traffic Referrals**
– ChatGPT now includes citations and links to external sources, driving traffic to websites directly from AI-generated responses.
– Websites that are frequently referenced by ChatGPT are experiencing increased visibility and engagement.
3. **Shift in Search Behavior**
– Users are relying more on AI-generated summaries rather than clicking through multiple search results.
– This trend is reducing dependency on traditional search engines for information discovery.
## **Impact on SEO and Digital Marketing**
The growing role of ChatGPT as a traffic referrer is prompting businesses and content creators to rethink their SEO and digital marketing strategies.
### **1. Optimizing for AI-Driven Search**
– Websites must ensure their content is structured in a way that AI models can easily interpret and reference.
– High-quality, authoritative content is more likely to be cited by ChatGPT, increasing visibility.
### **2. Changes in Organic Search Traffic**
– As users obtain answers directly from ChatGPT, click-through rates on traditional search engine results pages (SERPs) may decline.
– Businesses need to monitor traffic sources and adapt their strategies accordingly.
### **3. New Opportunities for Content Discovery**
– ChatGPT’s ability to surface niche content provides opportunities for smaller websites to gain exposure.
– Brands can leverage AI-driven search by creating content that aligns with common user queries.
## **Challenges and Considerations**
While ChatGPT’s role as a traffic referrer presents new opportunities, it also raises concerns:
– **Accuracy and Misinformation:** AI-generated responses may not always be accurate, leading to potential misinformation.
– **Dependence on AI Platforms:** Businesses may become overly reliant on AI-driven referrals, reducing their control over traffic sources.
– **Impact on Traditional Search Engines:** As AI chatbots gain prominence, search engines may need to evolve their models to maintain relevance.
## **Conclusion**
ChatGPT’s growing influence as a traffic referrer is reshaping search behavior, challenging traditional search engines, and altering digital marketing strategies. Businesses and content creators must adapt to this changing landscape by optimizing for AI-driven search and leveraging new opportunities for content discovery. As AI continues to evolve, the future of search will likely be a blend of conversational AI and traditional search engines, creating a more dynamic and interactive information ecosystem.
### **What’s Next?**
As AI-powered search continues to develop, businesses should stay informed about emerging trends and adjust their strategies to remain competitive. The shift towards AI-driven search is just beginning, and its long-term impact on digital marketing and online visibility will be significant.
